Why API Gateway Pricing Is Hard to Calculate Manually

Most providers have five or more pricing dimensions that interact. The common mistake is looking only at the request fee and ignoring the other components.

Request fee

The headline number. AWS HTTP API: $1/M. AWS REST API: $3.50/M. Cloudflare: $0.30/M. But this is never the only cost.

Data transfer

Charges for every GB sent from the gateway to the internet. AWS and Azure charge $0.09/GB. At 10 KB payloads and 100M requests, that is 954 GB = $85.86. Cloudflare charges $0.

Caching

AWS REST API caches at $0.028/GB/hour. A 10 GB cache costs $20.16/month. This can save thousands in request fees for read-heavy APIs with repeated responses.

WAF and security

AWS WAF: $5/rule/month + $0.60/million requests. A 10-rule WAF adds $50+ to your bill. Cloudflare includes WAF in Business and Enterprise. Kong includes rate limiting with all plans.

Base fees

Kong Konnect charges $105/service/month before any requests. Traefik Hub charges per managed service. Azure APIM charges a fixed hourly fee per gateway unit. These dominate at low volumes.

Support tiers

The calculator uses official pricing from each provider's public pricing pages, verified against primary sources in April 2026. It models request fees, data transfer fees (at $0.09/GB for AWS and Azure, $0 for Cloudflare), and caching costs where applicable. It does not include: custom enterprise discounts, multi-region replication costs, WAF add-on fees, support tier costs, or authorization Lambda invocation costs for AWS. Treat the output as an accurate baseline estimate, not a final invoice.
What is the cheapest API gateway at 100M requests/month?+
At 100M requests/month with a 10 KB average payload, Cloudflare Workers Paid is cheapest at approximately $32/month (zero data transfer fees). AWS HTTP API is next at approximately $195/month (including $95 in data transfer). Kong Konnect depends on service count - at 10 services it costs $3,425/month for requests alone plus $1,050 in service fees. Cloudflare is the clear cost winner at this volume for most workloads.
Does the calculator include data transfer fees?+
Yes. Data transfer is calculated from your payload size input. AWS and Azure charge $0.09/GB outbound. Cloudflare charges $0 (zero egress policy). Kong Konnect does not charge for data transfer on the Konnect platform, but you pay for data transfer on your own infrastructure where the data plane runs. The data transfer component can double your AWS bill at high volumes with large payloads.
